MedEngine Warmly Welcomes: Juulia Jylhävä

Yet again we have amazing news! It’s our pleasure to announce that Juulia Jylhävä joins the Medical Data Science team in Finland.

Juulia is a true scientist, to her core. She’s subject and matter focused, and likes to back-up her assertions with what science has to say. She says she’s been described as very determined and rational—good qualities for a scientist—and very down-to-earth and upright.

Juulia’s background is in molecular epidemiology, with expertise in aging-related diseases using cohort, register and biobank data. She obtained her MSc at the University of Jyväskylä and PhD at Tampere University. “In addition, I am a Docent in immunology at Tampere University and in epidemiology at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden”, she tells us. That’s impressive.

Before joining MedEngine, Juulia worked as a research group leader in academia, which is something she still does part-time as there are a few ongoing projects.

I’ve always been drawn to science, as it can give us objective answers about the state of things.

Juulia says she’s always been curious about how the human body works and how complex and multifactorial the determinants of human health are. “So, studying molecular biology and later epidemiology just felt like the right choice for me. I’ve also always been drawn to science as it can give us objective answers about the state of things, often proving our assumptions wrong!”, she exclaims.

At MedEngine, Juulia’s interest was piqued by the possibility to do science with real-life implications.”

What gets Juulia excited? It’s finding a way to answer very complex research questions and conveying new knowledge on topics that have persistent knowledge gaps. “I feel that as a scientist, I have an obligation to advocate for science and base our conceptions on research findings. I’ve also had the privilege to work with statisticians and clinicians who are among the leading experts in their fields, giving me a whole new perspective on many things”, she sums.

At MedEngine, Juulia’s interest was piqued by the possibility to do science with real-life implications: for example, improving treatment practices and overall finding solutions to address pressing health issues. “But also, no less, the enthusiastic atmosphere and great colleagues!”, she adds with a smile.

Outside of work Juulia likes to go to the gym or just walk in nature and enjoy the silence, whenever possible. As it’s obvious by now, Juulia’s keen on learning new things about how the world works, so she likes to follow science news—in her own area of expertise, but also outside her own field.

I really like to listen to Finnish and Swedish melodic metal music.

As pets are very liked in the MedEngine office, we have to ask if Juulia has any? “Not at the moment, but I’m definitely a dog person—and so are my husband and son—so let’s see if we’ll have one someday!”

“In terms of music, what I really like is listening to Finnish and Swedish melodic metal music; I just find it absolutely beautiful and soothing, especially when life gets hectic.”

Beautiful! We have a few fellow metalheads at MedEngine as well! 🤘

A Warm Welcome, Juulia!
