This Spring, Tina Bech Olesen has joined the Copenhagen office, and started as a Scientific Consultant in the Medical Data Science team in Denmark.
Tina is a very good listener. She says she often remembers details of conversations with colleagues and friends, even from many years back. She also says she prefers to listen to others rather than to talk about herself.
Tina has a background in epidemiology and public health. “I hold an MSc Epidemiology from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), an MSc Public Health from the University of Copenhagen, and a PhD in Epidemiology and Public Health from the University of Copenhagen.”
“ She’s lived in many different places around the world.”
Tina likes people and different cultures and languages. She has lived in many different countries and cities around the world: London, Oslo, Copenhagen, Lima and more. “While I worked as a research assistant at The Cancer Registry of Norway in Oslo, I found that I really liked both epidemiology and cancer research. Two of my colleagues there had studied Epidemiology at LSHTM, so I decided to do that too. Ever since I have worked within epidemiological research,” she sums.
“I think that was one of the best things I’ve done, to study an MSc Epidemiology in London. My fellow students were from all over the world and the teaching and learning environment at LSHTM is just great. I got a lot of practice in working with all aspects of epidemiological studies, like funding applications, study design, statistical methods, interpretation of results and scientific writing and much more. Furthermore, I really liked living in London—it was one of the best years of my life! I walked around London a lot, it’s a great way to explore the city. I also visited all the museums like Tate Modern, National Portrait Gallery and so on.”
“Tina found MedEngine through her former colleague.”
Both during and after her PhD Tina has worked with epidemiological studies focusing primarily on cancer, cancer screening and Human Papillomavirus (HPV). She did her first postdoc at the Danish Cancer Society Research Center in Copenhagen and a second at the Department of Clinical Epidemiology at Aarhus University. Thereafter she led a large research project on the indirect effects of the COVID-19 pandemic at The Danish Clinical Quality Program – National Clinical Registries (RKKP) in Aarhus.
Tina found MedEngine through her former colleague. “What inspires me are great colleagues, a good working environment, challenging tasks, the ability to create new knowledge—and the possibility to learn new things”, she says excitedly. “Additionally, here at MedEngine, I expect to gain even more experience in conducting real-world evidence studies using data sources at the Nordic level.”
“I’ll have to try the outdoor pool, just outside our Helsinki office!”
Tina now resides in Aarhus and enjoys being closer to nature. Outside of work she likes going for walks, reading books, listening to music, travelling and swimming. “At some point I will have to try the outdoor Allas Sea Pool in Helsinki, just outside our Helsinki office!”
Nice! I’m sure there are at least a few people readily available to join you! A warm welcome, Tina! 🏊♀️
